Professional Photoshoot Clothing Dos and Don'ts
Should I wear my brand colors for a professional photoshoot?
I was just asked this question by a client this week. I love this question because you know I love branding, but more than that I love pictures that capture the essence of your brand.
A great photoshoot requires a skilled photographer and good lighting but the clothing choices of the subjects being photographed can play a significant role in the overall success of a photoshoot. Whether you're preparing for a corporate headshot, a family portrait, or an editorial piece, it's crucial to select the right attire that complements your vision. Let’s go over the dos and don'ts of professional photoshoot clothing to help you capture the perfect shot.
Dos:
Wear neutral colors.
I always recommend wearing neutral colors so that your photos are timeless and more versatile. Gray and cream colors are almost always better than black and white.
Dress appropriately for the occasion.
Consider the purpose and context of the photoshoot when choosing your clothing. Different occasions call for different attire. For professional headshots or corporate portraits, opt for formal or business-casual attire, ensuring your clothing aligns with the industry or company's expectations. For family or casual outdoor shoots, go for more relaxed and comfortable outfits that reflect your personal style and the theme of the shoot.
Pay attention to details.
Remember that small details can make a big difference in the final images. Ensure that your clothing is clean, wrinkle-free, and properly ironed. Check for loose threads, missing buttons, or any other imperfections that might be noticeable in close-up shots. Additionally, pay attention to accessories such as jewelry, belts, or scarves, as they can add a touch of personality and style to your overall look. However, avoid excessive accessories that may overpower the main subject or distract from the intended focus of the photo. An exception might be if bold pair of glasses is part of your personal brand. The most important thing to remember is to be intentional with your choices.
Don'ts:
Avoid loud or distracting patterns.
While patterns can be visually appealing, they can also distract attention away from the main subject. Steer clear of busy patterns, loud prints, or clashing colors that might create visual confusion or make it difficult for the photographer to emphasize the intended focal points. Solid colors or subtle textures tend to work best, allowing the subject to shine while maintaining a clean and elegant aesthetic.
Stay away from logos and branding.
Unless it is a deliberate part of the concept or the shoot's purpose, it is generally best to avoid clothing with prominent logos, branding, or slogans. Logos can quickly date the images and divert attention from the individuals being photographed. Opt for timeless, logo-free clothing that will withstand the test of time and keep the focus on the emotions, expressions, and connections between the subjects.
Avoid overly trendy outfits.
While it's tempting to follow the latest fashion trends, keep in mind that they may quickly become outdated. Instead, aim for a classic and timeless style that will stand the test of time and age well. Trends come and go, but a well-chosen, timeless outfit will ensure your photographs remain relevant and visually pleasing for years to come.
Pro tips:
SLEEP - Eyes are less puffy and dark circles are less noticeable after a good night's sleep.
EXFOLIATE - A professional facial is amazing but a simple natural oatmeal bar with a washcloth will do, or favorite face scrub. This will help bring forth plump new cells to the surface and give you a glow. Be sure to do it the night before if you tend to get red.
MOISTURIZE - Hydrate inside and out the night before and prior to your photography session. Avoid alcohol the night before (dehydrates skin).
STAY NATURAL - Use neutral natural colors on nails and make-up (less is more). If you tend to have shiny skin, bring a translucent powder with you for touch ups.
STRESS FREE - Give yourself plenty of time before and after session so that you are not rushed or stressed. In fact, make a day of it and have fun taking care of you!
